Eden Valley Loop 3 (32km) Print

EV3-W1 Waypoint 1 Eden Valley Loop 3
From Keld farmyard (parking may be available), cross the road and take the bridleway straight across. Follow this track down to a gate into a wood, pass through it and down the wood to the river.

EV3-W2 Waypoint 2 Eden Valley Loop 3
Cross the river via the bridleway and continue up through the farm and buildings at Kemplee (NB: There are plans for a diversion here to avoid the farm buildings, follow the signs). The bridleway then goes up a hard track, round a corner to a gate, then continues past Highgate Farm to the minor road to Morland.

EV3-W3 Waypoint 3 Eden Valley Loop 3
Turn left here and proceed downhill right into Well Lane (alternatively, you can avoid the road by forking left to the river, which can be crossed by a shallow ford. After the ford turn right and then left by the pub to re-join the road).

EV3-W4 Waypoint 4 Eden Valley Loop 3
Take the second left into the village and up the hill, keeping left at the top (signed for Newby).

EV3-W5 Waypoint 5 Eden Valley Loop 3
On reaching Newby village, turn right and soon after turn left on a byway which goes around the back of the village (it can be wet and overgrown at the far end).

EV3-W6 Waypoint 6 Eden Valley Loop 3
Turn left at the road (The link to Loop 2 is just to the right) and keep on this road following the signs to Sleagill.

EV3-W7 Waypoint 7 Eden Valley Loop 3
Turn left into Sleagill village and then right for Reagill.

EV3-W8 Waypoint 8 Eden Valley Loop 3
After a short distance, before reaching Reagill village, turn right off the road at the bridleway sign for Threaplands and cross several fields before reaching the farm (Threaplands). Follow the bridleway through the farmyard, out the other side of the farmyard, and crosses another field before joining the farm track halfway down (NB: This is another anomaly, it is expected that the line will in due course be diverted to go straight down the farm track which is much more logical).

EV3-W9 Waypoint 9 Eden Valley Loop 3
At the end of the track turn right and then left down the road to a crossroads (marked settlement on the map). Continue straight across on the bridleway to Oddendale, crossing two footpaths and continuing via Harberwain Rigg and towards Oddendale.

EV3-W10 Waypoint 10 Eden Valley Loop 3
There are two routes here: either turn left on the bridleway to Lane Head and across the open moorland to a point where this bridleway meets the other at GR 612129, or carry straight on in a southerly direction and turn sharp left in a V shape (still on the bridleway) to the point where the other route joins it (ref. above). At certain times of the year you may be asked to avoid the V-shaped, southern section due to activities on the estate.

EV3-W11 Waypoint 11 Eden Valley Loop 3
Continue down the same bridleway (now known as Slack Randy) meeting a small section of byway before joining the road into Crosby Ravensworth village.

EV3-W12 Waypoint 12 Eden Valley Loop 3
Pass right through the village on the road to Maulds Meaburn (just over 1.6km), with a cattle grid at both ends and a steep hill down to the river.

EV3-W13 Waypoint 13 Eden Valley Loop 3
At the end of the village turn right over a bridge and through the gate by the cattle grid and head up the hill known as Brackenslack Lane. After passing a house called Holesfoot (where parking might be possible) there is a T-junction with a bridleway going straight ahead (NB: to shorten this Loop you could turn left here and take the road back to Kings Meaburn, about 4.8km).

EV3-W14 Waypoint 14 Eden Valley Loop 3
To continue on the Loop take the bridleway immediately in front of you and proceed up the hard track with fields on either side (there are sheep and cattle pens on this track which may contain livestock but usually only when accompanied by farmers working with them).

EV3-W15 Waypoint 15 Eden Valley Loop 3
At the third gate, you will see Appleby town in the distance turn sharp left here (not straight on towards Appleby). Follow this long straight track to another gate and then head uphill past a stone quarry on your right.

EV3-W16 Waypoint 16 Eden Valley Loop 3
Going through the gate at the top the bridleway becomes a grassy track, bearing right to another gate and uphill past a small lake (good for wildlife) and continues down to the farm called Jerusalem. Here, it goes straight through the farmyard. Follow the farm drive straight on and bear left until it meets the road.

EV3-W17 Waypoint 17 Eden Valley Loop 3
Turn left onto the minor road running west. After 1.6km continue right and where the road turns sharp left, continue straight ahead onto the bridleway which goes to Burwain Hall (Please take care not to ride on the grass verges on this private drive). On reaching the Hall take the gate into a field on the right of the house.

EV3-W18 Waypoint 18 Eden Valley Loop 3
The bridleway now goes along the hedge line straight ahead but it can be very wet and it is advisable to stay on the ridge to the left of a fairly big ditch. This takes you to a bridleway gate into a wooded area. Take the route into the woods and continue straight ahead and then steeply downhill to a small beck.

EV3-W19 Waypoint 19 Eden Valley Loop 3
Follow the bridleway through the wood and continue along the hedgerow turning left along the bridleway towards Sockenber.

EV3-W20 Waypoint 20 Eden Valley Loop 3
Going past the farmhouse, the track continues downhill and then turns sharp right. Follow the track all the way uphill again until it meets the road in Kings Meaburn (note the historical plaque which explains how the village got its name).

EV3-W21 Waypoint 21 Eden Valley Loop 3
Turn right here onto the road and through the village until you reach the Keld entrance, returning to the start of Loop 3.
